These beautiful memories of the love he has for Ennis and more important the love Ennis has for him and the promise he made to him. Ennis did not break that promise he tried his utmost to show Jack in every way, but it was the agonizing memories of his mothers sacrifice to him which drowned out all other feelings especially since he had buried it so deeply into his subconscious and the horrors of prison pulled it all to the surface to hard to take no longer believing he was worthy of Ennis love. Sometimes you have hit rock bottom before you can rich for the top. I think Jack has reached his bottom, his memories of Ennis and the love is the rope to reach for the top.
