Ennis had to leave to give Jack the time he needed to get his shit together. It might have backfired but Jack is stronger than he gave himself credit for.
It was the hardest thing Ennis had done but if he had stayed they would have eventually fallen apart. And Ennis needed time to work things out in his own mind.
We'll find out what Ennis was up. He may have been apart from Jack but he was never far away.
