While I can appreciate that John is stuck in kind of a difficult position, since it's now up to him to protect Jack, I also want to punch him in the mouth for not telling Jack the whole truth about Ianto. Jack feels guilty about using his sway to manipulate people and hates doing it, but John doesn't seem to have the same problem with manipulating Jack. Telling Jack that he doesn't want to resist his sway, letting him know he really does want him, and also letting him think that Ianto had a choice in what happened with Elle all smacks of deceit. He may not be able to outright lie, but omitting the truth is exactly the same thing. I'm not very happy with John at all right now.
