It really is difficult not only for the inmate, but also for their family. Each person suffers in their own way so it's not just the person in prison who is being punished, but also their family.
I do wish Jack would talk to Ennis about what is going on in his mind. It would be a start to mending their slowly breaking relationship. Maybe Rufus can be of help to them both.
