Today, Ianto should have been out playing with the rest of the world. Instead, he was in his kitchen, pretending to be doing...things.
The truth was he was brooding.
Jack was upstairs packing...despite the fact that so much remained unresolved between them. Despite the fact that Ianto didn’t want him to go.
A couple of months ago he would have said the idea was outrageous. But back then, they hadn’t been thrown together in the same house...they hadn’t had the most delicious and passionate sex he’d ever experienced...he hadn’t fallen in love with him. Jack had sneaked into his heart—if he’d ever left.
The fact that Jack had refused to be paid to protect him gave him some small hope. There would have been time when Ianto would have seen him volunteering as some further evidence that Jack was just as over-protective as his family. But given what he knew of Jack now, he thought it was just another way for him to show he cared.
Jack protected those he cared about. It went to the core of who he was—to his family and his old neighbourhood. Of course, the fact that he saw the Jones’ as a substitute family could account for a lot about why he’d volunteered. He could simply be doing his family a favour.
Yet, there was a part of him that refused to believe that was the whole explanation—at least, he hoped there was more to it. Because Jack hadn’t only volunteered his company’s services, he had insisted on protecting him personally when he could have delegated that to any of his staff.
When Ianto had thought Owen was paying Jack, he’d just assumed that his brother had insisted that Jack take a personal hand in the case. Instead, it had been Jack who had insisted. Ianto liked to think that it was because he cared about him, wanted him...and more.
Owen’s words sounded in his head again. Don’t wait too long, little brother, or you may screw it all up.
At a noise overhead, he looked up at the ceiling. Jack was up there packing and he was down here feeling all nervous. He felt nauseous at the thought of the conversation he ought o be having with Jack.
Annoyed with himself, he threw the dish towel he had absentmindedly been using to wipe the counter. Turning, he made his way out of the kitchen and up the stairs.
As he went up, he thought about what he should say to him. It’s suddenly occurred to me that I love you? Our relationship may be a mistake, but it’s a mistake I want to spend the rest of my life making?
Maybe he should just start with, don’t go. Don’t go. Please don’t go.
He walked along the upstairs hallway and stopped at the open doorway to the guest room. Jack was tossing some jeans into a suitcase. He looked foreboding and hot as hell in his jeans and T-shirt as he projected a casual sexiness.
Jack looked up and, when he saw Ianto standing in the doorway, he paused for a second, folded T-shirts in hand, before resuming his packing. ‘If you’ve come to do a victory dance at seeing the back of me, you’re a little early. I won’t be ready to walk out the door for a while yet.’
Ianto rubbed his sweaty palms on his jeans and walked into the room. ‘That’s not why I’m here.’
‘Really?’ He stopped packing and looked up at him. ‘Then why are you here, Button?’
‘I wish you wouldn’t call me that,’ he said annoyed. The name was irritating but also a turn-on, knowing that Jack had given him that name. And he did push all of Jack’s buttons as much as Ianto pushed his. Ianto continued, ‘I wanted to say thank you. And to apologise.’
Jack raised an eyebrow. ‘Thank me for what?’
‘For helping me.’ He took a deep breath. ‘For catching Manger.’ For defending me to my family. For making me love you.
‘And what’s the apology for?’
‘For giving you such a hard time.’
‘That’s the second time you’ve apologised to me in two weeks, Button.’ His lips curled into a sardonic smile. ‘Must be a record.’
Despite his best intentions, Ianto found himself becoming irritated by Jack’s taunting tone. And, frankly, it was easier to deal with him behind the shield of his annoyance. Coward. ‘What about the apology you owe me?’ Ianto demanded. ‘I haven’t heard any apology from you, Harkness.’
Jack sighed. ‘Okay, I’ll play along. Apology for what? Sleeping with you?’
Ianto rolled his eyes. ‘You purposely misled me about your security services. Owen didn’t hire you. You volunteered.’
Jack folded his arms and nodded. ‘Alright, I admit I’m guilty of doing that, but I’m not going to apologise for trying to protect you. Is that all you came here to say?’
‘Why,’ Ianto asked.
‘Why what?’
‘Why did you volunteer?’
Jack regarded Ianto for a second before answering, his face inscrutable. ‘Just following through on what I told Owen I’d do, which was improving your security.’
‘No, I mean why did you volunteer when Owen could well afford to hire you? And why did you show up when you could have sent any number of the experts that you employ? Why did you insist on staying when you had no obligation to?’ There, he’d gotten it out.
Jack unfolded his arms. ‘I think you know the answer to all those question,’ Jack said softly and moved toward him.
‘No, I don’t. Why don’t you enlighten me?’ Ianto persisted.
‘Have any theories suggested themselves?’
A tingle started in the pit of his stomach as Jack came closer. ‘You were doing a favour for a friend you consider to be family?’
Jack nodded, seeming to mull it over. ‘That would be a theory. Do you believe it?’
‘Is it true?’ Ianto countered.
‘No.’
Ianto backed up but Jack kept coming.
‘I wouldn’t say that it was my major motivation, much as I like your family.’
Ianto skirted the side of the bed and found himself with his back against the wall. ‘You must not like them much then,’ he said quietly.
Jack braced an arm against the wall near Ianto’s head and caressed his cheek with the knuckles of his other hand. ‘Maybe I like you more.’
Ianto’s heart plummeted. Like, not love.
Ianto shoved him away and started to walk away but Jack grabbed his arm and whirled him around. Ianto felt the wall at his back again seconds before Jack’s lips were on his.
It was the way it had always been between them. A heavy dose of wanting and need shot through him. His sense of the world clouded over as he became sensitised to Jack’s every touch...his lips molding to his...his body pressing up against his.
He wrapped his arms around Jack’s neck, and kissed him back with all the pent up frustration in his body.
As soon as Jack felt Ianto’s willingness, he groaned and took the kiss deeper. His hands moved restlessly up and down Ianto’s sides before one snaked around and grabbed his ass to bring him firmly against him, letting Ianto feel his erection rubbing against his own.
Finally, Jack tore his mouth away from Ianto’s and they broke apart. They were both breathing heavily. Jack looked as if he still had half a mind to take up where they had just left off, which was, Ianto realised, not far from how he was feeling.
Jack spoke first. ‘You are by far the most frustrating man I have even known.’
‘Ditto,’ Ianto parried.
And then his face was devoid of its usual sardonically amused expression, and what he read there made his heart jump. ‘Are you going to make me say it?’ Jack paused, holding Ianto’s gaze so that he didn’t look away. ‘The reason I volunteered is that the thought of anything happening to you tore me up inside. I wanted to rip the bastard to pieces who was threatening you.’
‘Jack—’
‘No, let me finish,’ he said fiercely. ‘I may never be as polished as the people down at your country club, but I have plenty of money these days. You’d have trouble spending all of it even if you tried.’
Ianto nodded. A happiness was growing inside him. Not about the money—he had plenty of his own—but about the fact that Jack was laying his soul bare.
‘More importantly, we have tonnes of chemistry between us. The kind that a lot of people will never find.’
Ianto nodded again, not wanting to break the spell.
‘And you sure as hell aren’t going to find another man who loves you more than I do.’

on 2012-01-14 10:21 am (UTC)Standing ovation from me this story is brilliant. The pace is excellent nothing is forced. When things happen there is feeling of rightness about it.
I loved every word and put this in my memories. You should serious rework this and tryng and sell it as a romance.
Wonderful stuff.

Way to ratchet up the romance, lady!

on 2012-01-14 03:24 am (UTC)I cannot wait to hear Ianto's reaction to Jack finally admitting he loves him. He can't possibly screw this up now.
The only real problem I see here, is that when Ianto tells Jack he loves him, in the next chapter, that's also the last chapter, and the end of this story. Really not liking that part of this at all.
Hm, I bet you're already thinking of the next story so we don't all go into withdrawal when this is over, cuz you're just so considerate that way. Yep. I'm gonna go with that.
*Nods and grins, and nods and grins*
