Epilogue
It took him a while to slowly climb up the side of the rift toward where the Doctor and the Myfanwy were. His shoulder ached, and he was bleeding from a dozen small cuts. But somehow he had to get out of there. He looked back down the side of the rift. They were going to have to go back and get Jack's body and give him a hero's burial. But there would be time for that later.
Finally he reached the top edge and sat down to rest on the hard rock outcropping that looked out over the rift site. The sun was slowly coming out from behind some clouds. The Hub Cannon had made the rift deeper, and destroyed the asteroid the alien had arrived on. Yet now the rift didn't look as dead, as ruined as it had when he and Jack went down into it.
Over his head a hawk circled. Its cry made him look up at the wonderful blue sky. The clouds were gone and the warm sun was shining. Not the heat of the alien sun, or the desert sun, but the comfort of life-giving warmth. It felt good on his shoulders.
Below his feet a weed was growing out of a rock, sprouting so fast he could see it grow.
He looked around. Life of all kinds was taking hold again, sprouting as if pouring from the ground. Even in the impact rift he could see the green of weeds exploding in life from the barren earth that just a few hours before had held the anger of an entire alien planet's Vortex.
The hawk cried again over his head, reminding him he had to move, to get things done that needed to be done.
"Alright," Ianto said, pushing himself to his feet. A few hundred meters away, the Doctor was coming out of the hatch of the Myfanwy. He knelt at once and studied the ground. Even from this distance, he could see the carpet of green springing up around the ship. He had to admit that, after all the years of always worrying about being killed by a Phantom, it felt strange to walk outside like this.
And even stranger to see green grass and plants growing wild.
He had no doubt it would take everyone time to learn again how to go into the fields and the mountains without fear. But the human race would eventually come out of its shell and live the life the planet was offering.
*~*
Deep in the fissure where Jack’s body lay still, the air around him swirled in colours of deep blue and silver. It wrapped the captain in a blanket of warmth and flowed deep within him closing his wounds and repairing the damage to his body.
It spoke to him, "I bring life!"
With a loud gasp Jack sat up. “Ianto?”
Jack had given the human race a great gift. He had given everyone life. And the Vortex believed he should be rewarded. Clearly, death was not the end. In Jack's case it was the beginning.

on 2012-11-03 04:37 am (UTC)So, now you have to read all my feelings at once:
First sadness; when Owen, Tosh and Rhys died.
Second anger; I think you know at whom!...Hart!!!! **shakes fist**
And the most stronger of all: Love, trust, support; Jack always by Ianto's side, helping him, protecting him, saving him.
Did I cry with the scene of Jack's sacrifice? yes, I do. And the end.. "I bring life" Oh yeah!
